Smoking
Lots of kids at Oberlin smoke cigarettes. Camel Lights and Filters are probably the most popular, with Parliaments and Marlboros near the top too. Lucky Strike has some fierce loyalty among its smokers.
Many students roll their own cigarettes with rolling tobacco/papers usually bought at Mickey Mart. For around $3 for 50+ cigarettes, it's quite a bit cheaper. No filters to gross up the environment, either.
Near the entrances of many buildings on campus you'll see an ugly-gray bulbous thing with a three-foot stem of the top and two holes in it. Stick your cigarette butts in there and don't toss them on the ground.
[edit] Smoking policies in living spaces
[edit] Co-ops
The smoking policies of living co-ops is usually decided upon by the members of the co-op every semester. Generally, roommates decide on whether or not they'd want smoking in their rooms, and people don't smoke in public places.
Co-op smoking policies, because they're generally perceived as fair (and because, in theory, every co-oper votes on it and can propose to modify it at any time), tend to be well-adhered-to.
Rooms in the basements of Keep and Harkness used to be used as smoking lounges but they've been closed/given other uses recently.
[edit] Dorms and Village housing (program houses too I suppose?)
No smoking, except for the top floor of the Firelands building.
