Oberlin College Mailroom

Oberlin College Mailroom (Dec 2004)

(usually referred to as "the Mailroom" or OCMR)

The mailroom: get a package from your parents, pick up your copy of the Oberlin Review, get lots of pieces of paper and put them straight into the recycling bins conveniently located under the rows of mailboxes.

You keep the same OCMR box for four years, unless you take an Academic Leave of Absence (or get suspended for a year), in which case they roll the dice again and give you a new one.

The mailroom is located in the basement of Wilder.

[edit] Opening your mailbox

The locks on the mailboxes never fail to confuse the hell out of a good number of new students. Like a padlock, your combination is three numbers: you've gotta dial in the first, then the second, then the third, then open it up. Here's how to do it:

  1. Unlike a padlock, you've gotta turn the dial counter-clockwise first. Spin it a few times for good measure, then stop at the first number of your combination.
  2. Now clockwise. Give it one full turn so you're back at your first number again, then continue to and stop at your second number.
  3. Then turn it counterclockwise until you hit your last number. You'll probably feel a little click when you get close.
  4. Now for the part that screws everyone up. Turn it slowly clockwise, just a few notches, until it pops open.
  5. Ta-da!

This style of mailbox is also seen at other colleges around the country. (Middlebury, for example.)
