The Department of German has its offices and classrooms in Peters Hall.

The German Department offers two majors, one in German Language and Literature and one in German Studies. The former can be reccommended if you really love literature. The latter allows for a curriculum with much greater breadth, including courses in German film, European history, music history, European politics and other related areas. If you are into German-speaking countries and their culture, but aren't in love with literary analysis, you should major in German Studies.

There are also many opportunities for study abroad, including the German Exchange Scholarship.

The German faculty currently consists of three regular professors, a visiting professor, a faculty-in-residence and a German Teaching Assistant/Exchange Student. For 2004-2005, those people are:

[edit] Writer-in-Residence Program

Every year, a contemporary German writer is invited to teach a weekly seminar at Oberlin on their own work. Past writers have included many significant figures in modern German literature, including Christa Wolf, Ulrich Plenzdorf, Jurek Becker, Barbara Frischmuth, Zafer Senocak and many others.

The German Department and German program house sponsor a number of activities, including lectures, parties, and the ever-popular Stammtisch.
