First Merit Bank

First Merit, at the corner of Main and College.

FirstMerit is at least the bank with the largest building in Oberlin. Like all the banks, it's close to campus. There are lots of FirstMerits in OH, so some native peoples can actually keep their home account, making this a more attractive banking option than other banks for them.

Many Obies consider FirstMerit to be "the man", but that doesn't stop it from being the most-used bank on campus.

They have several ATMs in Oberlin:

• one in the bank building itself
• one by Firelands
• one by Missler's

In the five years I've had an account with them, they've always been nice to me. Sure $30 a pop for going under sucks, but that's the real world. But if I had to open an account now, I'd probably choose another bank. —alxndr (talk) 14:07, 8 June 2007 (EDT)

Almost everyone on livejournal warns anyone who will listen to never step foot near First Merit...

The college uses them, so all college paychecks are First Merit checks. Unfortunately, they recently started charging $10 to cash one of their checks if you don't have an account there, so be sure you have an alternate check-cashing solution if you need one. --208.66.211.217 (24 Aug 2007)
