[edit] Description from course catalog
- This seminar examines Spanish, French, Dutch, and British encounters with the native peoples of North America during the initial centuries of colonization: 1492-1800. We will compare various attitudes and behaviors that shaped colonial contests with native peoples, and the range of native responses to different European empires and their colonists. We will develop both materialist and culturalist approaches to explicate these encounters.
