Co-ops
Cooperatives are groups of people getting together and doing work themselves, instead of hiring people to do it for them.
At Oberlin, this often means students get together and do work for themselves, instead of relying on the college to hire workers. Members of living co-ops govern and clean their own living spaces; members of dining co-ops manage food orders, organize work schedules, cook and clean. This means less opportunities for the non-college community to benefit, but since the cost to each student is less than living and eating with ResEd/CDS, it makes Oberlin College more affordable.
There are many other types of co-ops in the area:
- Bike Co-op
- Coffee Co-op (defunct?)
- Film Co-op
- Good Food Co-op
- Oberlin Photo Association Co-op
- Pottery Co-op
- Recycled Products Co-op
The CityWheels program is also kind of a co-op.
