The Oberlin Bookstore

The Oberlin Bookstore, located in downtown Oberlin, is the official provider of textbooks for the college. The bookstore also offers various Oberlin-branded clothing, gifts, and other accessories. In addition to textbooks and collegiate wares, the bookstore offers traditional books — novels, references, children's stories etc. It is open to the general public.

[edit] History and Ownership

In the days of Yore, the bookstore at the corner of College Court and West College Street was a co-op. It went bankrupt in the fall of 2001. Embarassingly without a bookstore for which to supply students books, the College encouraged the City to break the rule banning retail chains from downtown and allow Barnes & Noble College Booksellers Inc. to manage the store, under the conditions of:

  1. not having signage revealing it to be associated with Barnes & Noble, and
  2. being banned from selling any items sold by other downtown merchants.

The Co-op Bookstore used to have a coffee shop on the third floor and a selection of music available, however the building was renovated and access to the third floor from the inside was sealed off. The space is now used for offices of Conservatory staff.
