Bikes
Oberlin has lots of bikes.
Having a bike makes getting around campus very easy. (The less time you have to spend outside in the winter, the better.) Just about every building has a bike rack outside it, and some are even covered. And northern Ohio's flatness means you never have to ride up any hills.
The Bike Co-op allows students to rent a bike for $15/semester (plus a $30 deposit), or you can earn your own bike by putting in 8-10 hours of volunteer work. Members of the Bike Co-op can get help repairing bikes at the co-op. Membership costs $8/semester, or two hours of volunteer time.
There's a bike path that goes through Oberlin, too.
If you're looking to buy a new bike or having trouble getting your bike fixed at the bike co-op, the guys at Dale's Bike Store on Oberlin-Elyria Rd. are really helpful. They sell used bikes too. The store is easily within biking distance, but if you ask them nicely, employees are willing to drive you home if it's really cold out.
And it's important to remember that there is No bike riding on sidewalks.
[edit] Registering your bike
If you own your own bike, it's a good idea to register it with Safety & Security.
- It's free!
- If it gets stolen...
- If it's found, S&S will contact you.
- If you find it and it's locked up with someone else's lock, the registration number is virtually your only proof that the bike's actually yours. This is how you get S&S to unlock it.
