Anthropology

Anthropology at Oberlin is fairly small, and the department gets reviews ranging from ecstatic to outraged depending on who you ask. The department offers four introductory courses in different aspects of the field, and a plethora of potentially fascinating 200 and 300 level courses (again, depending on who you ask). Partially because of the department's small size, the major only requires 24 hours in the department; however, introductory courses in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology are all required (ANTH 101, 102, and 103 respectively). An additional course called Culture Theory (ANTH 353) is also required, as well as at least one seminar.

I've had really good luck with Valentina Pagliai's linguistic anthropology classes - i enjoyed most of the readings, and learned a lot. However, i was in it more for the linguistics than the anthropology. --jkimmel
