[edit] Description from course catalog
- This course explores women's experiences of and contributions to social, cultural, and political life in the U.S. during the 1950s. We pay particular attention to their participation in the growth of suburbia and rise of consumer culture, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Beat Generation, and youth culture. We also analyze how differences in race, ethnicity, class, region, age, and sexual identity helped shape the opportunities available to individual women.
