[edit] Description from course catalog

What is the role of the writer after magical realism and the dictatorships, in an age of “neoliberalism”? The course covers the twilight of the Boom novelists (García Márquez, Vargas Llosa) and reactions against the Boom (Fuguet), the new feminism in México (Mastretta), and new approaches to the fantastic (Aira, Piglia, Bellatin) and the detective novel (Bolaño, Padura). Throughout we will interrogate what globalization means for Latin America, and for the art of fiction. Taught in Spanish.
