118 East Lorain Street

118 East Lorain is a newly-constructed off-campus house containing three large housing units. Each unit contains 3 bedrooms on the upper floor and a large, open first floor living room and kitchen. Washer/dryers are also included. Each apartment also has a large basement with sizable windows. Some of these apartments have furnished these basements, adding to the capacity of the building. Typically, students live in units A and B. These units have extremely thin walls.

The building and its neighboring properties are owned by Eric Spieth, who resides 30 minutes outside of Oberlin. Eric has earned a reputation as a responsible and trustworthy landlord who is respectful of his renters.

During the 2003-2004 school year, the A unit of 118 East Lorain was occupied by Ultimate Frisbee players Brendan Curran '04 and Mike Kramer-Duffield (MKD) '04. With their third housemate, Dan Harsha '04, the house was constantly packed with their Flying Horsecow teammates, drawn by the stolen cable and Playstation 2. In 2004, the basement of 118 East Lorain A was known as one.eighteen, a semi-permanent party space for Oberlin students that hosted bands, ExCo classes, and most regularly, live DJ's and house music. A professional lighting system and sound equipment was mounted on the wooden ceiling, a lighting and sound booth was located under the staircase, and a vibration-proof turntable rig was installed on the concrete basement floor. It is also the only known Oberlin house to ever contain both a fog maching and an air-raid horn.

The house was occupied the following year by Sasha Bartolf '06, Matt Weiner '06, Tebo Koloti, Tebo's loyal dog Buster, and others.

During the spring semester of the 2004 academic year, the acapella group Nothing But Treble agreed to operate the bar/door at 118 B and in doing so recouped the losses accumulated from royalty fees that were paid under an ill-advised recording agreement.
